5 Easy ways to fancy up a ponytail
by Erica Sagon
Gather hair into a ponytail — high on the head like Katy Perry’s ‘do, or slightly lower at the ear line — and secure with a hair tie. Separate a small section of hair from the underside of the ponytail and braid it. Holding the end of the braid so that it doesn’t unravel, wrap it around the base of the ponytail to conceal the hair tie. To hold the braid in place, secure the end with a bobby pin pushed into the underside of the ponytail. Finish with hair spray.
Give your tresses oomph a la Roxy Olin. Make a ponytail at the nape of your neck or low and off to one side. Wrap small sections of hair around the closed barrel of a curling iron (this method creates more relaxed curls than clamping hair in the iron). Use your fingers to break apart the curls and add texture; you’re going for an undone look. Spritz with hairspray and fuss up the ponytail a little more to channel Olin’s full, stylish ‘do.
ADD A HEADBAND
Take a cue from Paris Hilton and wear a headband with a low ponytail. Use the headband to keep bangs out of your face or let them come forward. Either way, you’ll want some hair peeking out from the front of the headband. Look for embellished and metallic styles with one or two straps, with a bit of elastic for a snug fit. Remember to position the ponytail low; otherwise, the look comes off as too youthful.
